DESPAIR 2003

Ha’ayin Chet St. corner Mishmarot St.

Watching the news in Europe I would come across reports on boats carrying immigrants that sink in the sea. Reported from a general point of view, the news perceived them as nothing but numbers. However, they did have identities. In the performance “Despair,” I wish to use facial and body gestures to convey this fact. On a boat with all these immigrants, I have come to believe that they are the new slaves of the century. I then photographed these immigrants, who ended up as a heartbreaking black and white photo. And so, I decided to give them presents: colorful nightingales (bulbul). If that boat ever sinks, the nightingales could fly. I gifted the immigrants colorful wings, so that they could fly as well.
